The first wharf was built in <strong data-start=\"769\" data-end=\"777\">1694<\/strong>, after which the first houses appeared around 1753. <\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"892\" data-end=\"1239\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Starting in <strong data-start=\"898\" data-end=\"906\">1870<\/strong>, wealthy Jewish merchants settled here. After a devastating hurricane in <strong data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"996\">1877<\/strong>, many wealthy families from Pietermaai moved to Scharloo, which proved safe and better located. In the <strong data-start=\"1099\" data-end=\"1133\">late 19th and early 20th centuries<\/strong>, the neighborhood grew to become Willemstad&#8217;s most prestigious neighborhood.  <\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1241\" data-end=\"1399\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The beautiful villas and colonial buildings &#8211;
